Who we are: This is Elk Road 208
Some stories start in a boardroom. Ours started on a back deck, with the scent of smoked elk steaks in the air and the easy laughter of two families that are more like one.
We’re Elk Road 208, founded by best friends Joey Meehan and Brian Baker. We were gathered with our families, telling stories from the mountains, when Joey said, “We should share this.” Not just the stories, but the feeling. The grit. The lifestyle.
In that moment, an idea born of friendship and a shared passion became real. Elk Road 208 was created as a place for the elk hunting community, and for anyone who understands that some roads aren’t just dirt and gravel. They’re a direct line to your soul.
From Boardrooms to Backcountry
By day, we run successful wealth management businesses, handling some of the most complex financial planning for families across the country. It’s a world of numbers, relationships, and strategy. But when the crisp air of fall rolls into the mountains, our focus shifts. The sport coats come off, the boots go on, and the epic journeys begin.
We trade spreadsheets for topo maps and client meetings for the sound of a distant bugle echoing through the timber. This isn’t just a hobby for us. It’s a reset. A return to something essential and true that grounds us. It’s a life built on grit, gratitude, and the profound sense of freedom you only find deep in the wild. Our wives and kids are our biggest supporters, and while they don’t hunt (yet), they’re a core part of the Elk Road family and our adventures.
The Elk Road Lifestyle
What does it mean to live the Elk Road lifestyle? It’s a mindset that extends far beyond any single hunt or state line.
It’s Family and Friends First. It’s the unbreakable bond forged around a crackling campfire, sharing stories under a blanket of stars. It’s about building a legacy of outdoor tradition and camaraderie.
It’s Deep Roots and Wide-Open Spaces. We are native Idahoans. It’s home. We cut our teeth in the steep, rugged mountains and dense timber of North Idaho. It’s some of the most challenging elk hunting you can find. That foundation prepares us for hunts across multiple states, from high deserts to alpine peaks. This brand is for all elk hunters, everywhere.
It’s Hunting Beyond the Harvest. The pursuit is the prize. The ethical elk hunting we practice is about the entire journey. The relentless preparation, the humbling failures, and the hard-won lessons. It’s about earning your place in the wilderness, not just taking from it.
It’s Grit and Gratitude. It’s pushing your body and mind past their limits on a brutal pack-out and feeling thankful for every grueling step. It’s the quiet respect you feel when standing over a harvested bull, understanding the sacrifice it represents.
Gear We Actually Use and Why
The gear you carry can make or break a hunt. We know because we’ve learned the hard way, with critical failures at the worst possible moments. That’s why our elk hunting gear reviews are different. We only talk about the equipment we actually run in the field, season after season.
We’ll tell you what works, what doesn’t, and why we trust a certain piece of gear with our hunt and our safety. You’ll get honest, field-tested insights because your time in the mountains is too valuable to be wasted on equipment that can’t keep up.
